Editorial: Silva Mediterranea 2009-2015, out of the shadow and into the light
by Christophe Besacier
When I was offered the opportunity to join the FAO Forestry Department in November 2009, with the mandate to support the secretariat of Silva Mediterranea, one of the most common concerns of FAO’s partners in the region was the low visibility of Mediterranean forests in the international scene. The more optimistic colleagues told me, “Good luck!’’, while others were sceptical about the ability of the Committee to be reborn from the ashes.

Mountains: water towers facing climate change
 |
“Mountain areas need more attention in international negotiations and discussions”, was the view of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco during an FAO side event at the 7th World Water Forum. Climate change is increasing the vulnerability of mountain communities and altering ecosystems, particularly the 60 to 80 percent of global freshwater resources mountains provide, but 2015 offers many arenas for action on policy, participants noted. |

Keeping sustainable forest management in the climate change-food security dialogue
Measures to mitigate climate change and increase food security and nutrition (FSN) must also include sustainable forest management, FAO Forestry said, to ensure that policy and technical frameworks are developed and implemented holistically. FAO cites the Republic of Korea and its decades-long approach of informing and reconciling competing sectoral interests as a key factor behind the country’s significant achievements in FSN and land restoration.

Forests and soils: key messages from the FAO Forestry Department
2015 is the International Year of Soils, and FAO Forestry has produced a set of key messages to provide some facts about the links between the two natural resources. Forests are important for soils for many reasons: forests and forest soils are significant carbon stores, have a key role in sustainable soil management and provide numerous ecosystem benefits. Forests are also of importance in soil conservation in semi-arid and arid areas and in reducing the vulnerability of mountain soils to degradation.

Speeding up access to satellite imagery to improve forest monitoring and reporting
Norway and FAO are partnering in a USD 4.5 million project to increase developing countries’ capacity in sustainable monitoring and reporting of their forest resources and forest-area changes. Countries will receive training in new, free and user-friendly FAO software operating on a “cloud-based” computing interface, which will greatly improve their access to satellite imagery and the speed of data processing.

Local stakeholders and international partners agree on major second phase of Fouta Djallon development
Management of the largest series of watersheds in West Africa, the Fouta Djallon Highlands (FDH), is set to move into a substantial second phase, following agreement between national stakeholders and international partners on all aspects of a new six-year project. Supported by GEF funding and jointly implemented by UNEP and FAO with the IBC of the African Union, phase two will be formally launched in November 2015, leading to expected increases in the integrity of FDH ecosystems thereafter.
